And install some good codec packs.

Hello! had the same problem some time ago and find out that WMP doesn't play AVI-DIVX files by itself, it needs a codec to work with this kind of files, it could also be fixed by installing some DIVX player and WMP will also use those codecs to play same AVI files, BTW also keep the WMP up to date to ensure compatibility. you can download divx codecs here http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/ good luck!

This problem is most likely not a WMP problem but a codec problem as has been hinted to. I HIGHLY recommend AGAINST codec packs - just grab the codecs you actually need. An easy way to tell is to pass your file though an app like g-spot which you can grab here: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and see what audio and video codecs the file uses. Most likely you just need to install the most recent version of divx from http://www.divx.com/ and all should work again.
