Windows service pack 2 problem

Recently my computer crashed and would not start so i recovered the drive to an earlier point and home edtion xp service pack 1 was re installed. after re installing service pack 2 my computer wont start up again. It is at the windows xp loading page and it will load windows xp and then it will shut down. Any ideas?

Try booting into safe mode by pressind F8 just before windows begins to load and selecting safe mode from the menu!!!!!

i booted into safe mode already and restored the system to before i had installed the update. i need help to figure out how i can install the update and fix the problem.
