Hi Everyone,

I recently bought an external hard drive and copied over most of my programs - excluding windows. I had to do a system recovery as some of my programs wouldn't work properly. I had to do windows update and get service pack 2 back on. When it trys to intall I have a message C:windows\systems32\cmd.exe is either open or running with another application. I made sure everything else was closed. Have I put some files onto my external drive that I shouldn't have?

Look forward to hearing from you.

You can safely copy data like documents, pictures, favorites and email address books, but programs are another story. Programs must be reinstalled by using the actual install files or CD's. You cannot save My Programs and expect them to work by just copying them to a newly restored hard drive. You could have imaged the original drive to the back up drive, and restored this image to the restored/recovered drive. This is another procedure
