Windows XP blocking all nework connections

I've been having this intermitent problem that sometimes when doing something over the network, my windows xp box all of a sudden clams shut all the network connections. It's as if some security watchdog steps in and shuts everything down. Windows keeps on running but it's as if I no longer had any net access, not even within my own network.

The Windows firewall is enabled, I do not have any othe firewall on the box.

The problem seems to occur when I do a lot of network activity that opens many connections, for example I copy/paste a large number of files from/to a network drive.

There is nothing informative in the event log when this happens. In fact, no messages at all around the time this happens.

Once this happens, it seems that only a reboot clears the situation.

This site seems to talk about a similar problem: http://www.lvllord.de/. I installed their patch but it made no difference. Either the limit it set the half-open tcp limit to wasn't sufficient for me or this isn't the problem.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? What's the fix?
