  1. I have an AMd athlon processor, with windows xp professional. I did a system restore because my sound card will not work and the computer boots normally but when its supposed to show the screen where the user is selected (USER/Guest), the screen goes black and all I see is the pointer. I tried all the variations of safe mode available and the same thing happens. All the system files seem to be in good condition because it boots normally. What could the problem be. Thanks in advance.
ps..My Xp disk is badly scratched (thanks to my sisters dog), what am I to do.

try booting the system with only the basic cards in place - sounds to me maybe a driver corruption.
