first place to start would be the drivers - and maybe start with the graphics.
can you boot reliably into safe mode?
have you changed any of the hardware?

i changed from the geforce 6200 agp to an ati 7000 series agp

as the nvidia had to be sent away

    could drivers be conflicting?

before installing a new graphics card it is always a good idea to remove the drivers and/or any software associated with the old card.

This Has happened to me before..... I did a quick-format......... it must've been the drivers but the problem fixed...
