windows xp startup

hi
this is my first time in a forum so if I am doing anything wrong please tell me, my problem is this
I am running windows xp and two things are happening. when I boot xp up on the windows xp logo screen where the squares are moving across the screen this freezes also when I do get to my desktop and the computer is loading my icons in my taskbar it gets through 90% of the icons and then freezes, I think these two actions are related. I am fairly new to computing so please bear this in mind if anyone answers. I have run avg virus checker.

If your computer is clean, reboot the computer with the XP cd in the cd drive and follow the screens to do a repair of the current Windows installation.
