Windows XP stuck on classic login mode

Hello

Until a few months ago I was using Windows XP with the windows login screen. As there are two accounts on this computer, we often left one logged in while we used another - using fast user switching. Then one day the computer decided to use classic logon mode, and I can't change it back.

I have tried changing the log on method in Windows control panel, it lets me select XP Logon mode no problem - but completely ignores this setting and continues to use classic logon. I've tried downloading registry fixes, changing registry settings, used 3rd party programs to change the logon screen, checked that the fast user switching service is enabled.. etc.. nothing seems to work.

Unfortunately I don't have any system restore points I can use to fix it, so apart from completely reinstalling Windows, anyone have any ideas how to fix the logon screen so I can use fast user switching again?

You didnt change anything before it happened? Like editing the explorer.exe or anything? I mean list anything that you did or happened before it did that.

Hmm sorry I can't think of anything that would have made it happen
The only thing I remember doing around about the same time was I was trying a few different firewalls (Kerio & NetVeda Safety.Net). Don't think that would have changed it though. I did try uninstalling the firewalls but that didn't fix the problem either.

Restore the Windows XP Welcome Screen

1. Verify that not only do you have multiple acccounts but that they are also all active.

2. Some 3rd party applications replace the Windows XP logon routine with their own. Look for the KEY:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GinaDLL

If it exists, delete it and its contents and reboot.

3. Export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" and rename as txt file, then post here so we can analyze it.
