Wireless Connection Media Disconnected (Windows XP)

Hi, not great with computers and had a look around at various forums and can't find a solution to my problem.

Essentially, whilst I can view the wireless network connections available, I cannot connect to the wireless connection I want to although all other computers at home can connect.

I think the issue is that I have no IP address on this computer (using Windows XP that has just been reinstalled). The result of ipconfig/release is:
No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected.

Sorry if further information is required, will provide whatever is needed. Thanks for any help!

First disconnect any wired connection and THEN attempt the wifi.
Something called DHCP is responsible to give the PC an IP address and also the DNS addresses (regardless of wired or wireless).

For wifi connections the system shows some 'bars' to indicate radio strength and the ability to connect to some wifi router :: like

You have to find the router id (the SSID) and make the connection BEFORE you will ever get the IP & DNS values.
Release/Renew are usable ONLY after you've made a connection to the router.
