Wireless Internet stopped working abruptly... help?

We have a wireless network. We use a wireless router. Everything was going along swimingly until the night before last. My wireless just stopped working and it signed me off. BAM.
My husband has a laptop, and he is sitting right here beside me, and our wireless is working for him!
He is wondering if this could be a hardware problem??
Yes, the wireless button is enabled.
No, it's not showing any wireless networks...it says
"No Wireless networks were found in range. Make sure the wirelss switch on your computer is on. To see an updated list click refresh networks."
We did that and get the same message again.
Please try to answer in dumb blondese if possible...thanks so much, Robin

lets try abit of troubleshooting..

- when the internet on your machine cuts off, see if you can still access the router, and if you can still access your husband's laptop.

- try your machine on a known wifi hotspot like a mcdonalds or starbucks or something and see if you can connect to it

-check all relevant settings (ssid, encryption, passcodes, channel etc) are correct to teh letter on both pc/laptop and router

- with your husband's laptop, access the router's main program and see if your laptop is being picked up by it

-check for anything that has changed recently - hardware, software, the weather, environment etc and post them here

- update the drivers for your wifi NIC from the manufacturer's website. And scan your pc for any nasties (ad/spy/malware, virus) while your at it

-move any objects, especialy one that has metal in it away from your router and laptop, so it has direct line of sight to each other

<- when the internet on your machine cuts off, see if you can still access the router, and if you can still access your husband's laptop.>

After it cut off, last Wednesday night, it never has worked since.
My husband's laptop has the wireless working and he is two freet away from me...he said to tell you that there are four other wireless networks from our neighborhood, that show up on my husband's laptop... and none of them show up on mine...

>- try your machine on a known wifi hotspot like a mcdonalds or starbucks or something and see if you can connect to it>

We have wireless in our home. It's working on my husband's lap top and desk top which is upstairs. It's only on my laptop that it isn't picking up the wireless.

-check all relevant settings (ssid, encryption, passcodes, channel etc) are correct to teh letter on both pc/laptop and router

The router is working. My husband's laptop has wireless and he is siting right here with me. We checked all settings and passcodes etc...

<- with your husband's laptop, access the router's main program and see if your laptop is being picked up by it>

THIS we will try!

<-check for anything that has changed recently - hardware, software, the weather, environment etc and post them here>

I can't think of anything that has changed..

>- update the drivers for your wifi NIC from the manufacturer's website. And scan your pc for any nasties (ad/spy/malware, virus) while your at it>

I run my Webroot Spy Sweeper every few days..it says I am clean. I tun Norton every few days..it says I am clean...

<-move any objects, especialy one that has metal in it away from your router and laptop, so it has direct line of sight to each other>

It always worked where it is before and hubby's laptop is still working in the same spot..

Thank you so much for these suggestions...is this a hardware problem with my laptop?

it may have well be.. however there are a couple more things i want you to try before any money or papers change hands......

-you did not mention if you tried updating the drivers for your wireless adapter from the manufacture's website or not..

-try turning the switch off and on for a bit

-do you remember if it got bumped or dropped at all? any strange noises coming out of your laptop, including when you move it?

-first i want you to goto [start>run] type in cmd then click on ok.
type in ipconfig /all and post us what it says there before proceeding to the next phase

- to reset the wifi adapter.
1. uninstall the usb wifi and all drivers/software from it. reboot.
2. goto device manager
[my computer (right click)>properties>hardware>device manager]
3. goto the network adaptors, remove everything there.
4. reboot and make sure your inbuilt wifi is turn on
5. when you get back into windows, it will automaticaly detect the wifi adapter. let it find the drivers for it or if you have the updated drivers on a disk/folder point it to that and install.
6. goto [start>run] type in cmd then click on ok.
type in ipconfig /all and post us what it says now
7. goto your router's configuration program and check that DHCP is turned on and your WAN/LAN/wifi/security settings are correct etc (which you've already done)

like i said, post us on your ipconfig readout before doing the wifi reset thing..

Hopefully your husband's wifi card (usb?) can plug into your laptop and visa versa. Try that. If you can and the problem follows your wifi card, then most likely the RF transmitter portion is dead.

ThANK YOU ALL AGAIN! It's fixed!!!!!! You did it!!!!!! msg

Than you!! The last post about this told us what was wrong..My husband just clicked Fn and the wireless button on the top line of the keyboard...AGAIN. The first time nothing happened...this time it made my wireless come back! Thank you! Is there a place I could send a donation to help you pay for your message board maybe? THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no donations, but being an active user and helping others is the name of the game here.

OK..send all of your computer questions to me!! msg

Now if that isn't enough to scare you baldheaded and breathless, I don't know what it! HAHA! Thank you all so much...I know nothing about the technical side of things..you guys are all so bright about this! I didn't know how to turn a computer on until 8 years ago and I don't know too much more now!!
Again, thanks so so much!!! Robin in Oklahoma
