I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router which is my main router on my main floor. If I have another router (Linksys WRT54G that a friend gave to me) can I put it by my other desktop computer in the basement and use it to receive a signal from the main router to get internet on the computer in the basement.

Basically, you can do it if your routers support it; more often it is a feature of special wirless extenders or access points though. My SMC router does support WDS for example, while I don't remember any WRT54G that could do it. But then again, there are so many revisions of that thing..

WDS, wireless bridge, wireless extender are the keywords you are looking for.
