What is the specific model of the board?? Is it an A8V-XE?? Is it a 939 board?? Unless I'm missing something, that board doesn't have an AGP slot. It's specifically PCI-e.

On the ASUS site it says AGP.
The DDR3 refers to the Memory thats in the Card - nothing to do with your Motherboard. It IS compatible.
AGP cards are getting harder to source, a 7950 would be a good choice, if you can find one.
The higher the model number - ie 7950, the better the performance, so a 7950 is a much better card than, say, a 7200

You might also want to take a look at the Radeon X1950pro, which a decent performer (beats 7900GS, not far behind 7950GT) for a reasonable price.
Tom's Hardware has a good VGA chart which allows you to compare different cards in popular games.
It doesn't neccessarily reflect any recent driver improvements, but does give a good overview...
