With my E6600 and x1900xtx . . .

should i go for a 1280x1024 19" lcd, or a 1600x1200 20.1" lcd? (supposing money is not an issue). I will most likely be playing FPS games like F.E.A.R., but also RTS games like AOEIII. So basically im asking, can my conroe and x1900xtx (with 2gb corsair xms2) handle 1600x1200 resolution smoothly with both cpu intensive and gpu intensive games? I can live with 1280x1024 of course but I wouldnt want to embarrass my graphics card if it can handle 1600x1200. I am just now replacing my 6 year old pos dell so i have no clue.

If it's a single card, then I doubt it will run FEAR at 1600x1200. I have 2 X1900s and I normally run FEAR at 1280x1024. It gives me around 85-90FPS with those cards and my E6700 but performance drops by around 20-30FPS when I crank up the resolution to 1600x1200. But other games will likely run at 1600x1200 comfortably. However, I feel that in order to enjoy any game, the minimum u would need is 60FPS. So I would say get a 1280x1024 monitor. 1600x1200 does look way better, but it's not worth it if the performance u get is below what one would consider playable. It's upto u in the end. Good luck! :grinthumb

Yeah, get the 19" LCD. You can always enable AA and AF, and your games will look amazing. You don't need that 1600X1200 resolution.

If my X850XT can pull off widescreen in FEAR (1440x900) with everything BUT AA fully maxed out [graphics-wise; your conroe will easily handle the number crunching, so I'm not talking about that] (in intense firefights I get about 34FPS, very playable) then yes, your X1900XTX can DEFINATELY pull off 1600x1200.

I'd say go with the widescreen/higher resolution LCD.

Every game, with the exception of FEAR and Oblivion, you can muster at the 1600x1200 higher-resolutions with great framerates. In all honesty, in the case of FEAR and Oblivion- flipping down to 1280x1024 really doesn't help all that much as these are just monster games that even with SLI or Crossfire still have some spots beyond current videocards with their settings maxed out.

Even at this, the framerates in FEAR and Oblivion at 1600x1200 isn't that bad. While it's not the pinnacle of "60-70fps!" these games are just fine at their lower rate for MOST players.

You can also look at this interactive benchmark toy at tom's hardware:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=548&model2=547&chart=214

From here, you can check many modern games with maxed settings at 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 on a single card X1900XTX.

You also have no reason to run *every* game at the native resolution of 1600x1200 if you do not wish so. Most LCD's will scale full-screen up to their native resolution with only some degree of scale-smearing on text. For the relatively few games that do not run SUPERB/FANTASTIC, but instead just "GOOD" at 1600x1200, this is an option but truly, I don't think you'll be seriously impacted as these games are slow in spot regardless of what you do (resolution/settings) and still have these kinds of issues when you double-up the graphics cards.

30FPS and up is fine with me.... Once I maxed out EVERYTHING [including CPU performance settings] (other than antialiasing, which at 1440x900 is not needed, and ofcourse with only medium texture resolution because of my 256MB card) I got about 23FPS in intense firefights (~37FPS on calm places).

This is on a:
X2 3800+
Radeon x850xt
1GB DDR2 800 (Corsair XMS2)

Remember, though, he has a x1900xtx and a conroe..... no need to compare my x850xt to that monster and my X2 3800+ to a conroe.

For me 30 FPS is great, 60 is perfect. For example, I wouldn't like 60 FPS on a GTA game, instead, I love 30 FPS.

i think that 1600x1200 is just amazing for games. i've got a 19" LCD and a 19" flat CRT, the lcd does 1280 and the crt does 1600, and playing games like COH on the crt is great.

ive got a e6600 and a freakin 7900gs, oh and 2gb of patriot ddr2-1067. fear runs great and so does coh. you'll be just fine mate. but if money really isnt an issue, just get both monitors. i wish i had another card so i could SLI and have 4 (ive got another 2 monitors i could hook up)

go for it champ
