Ok..this strikes me as odd..I have a win98 machine..it connects to the internet through a router but not directly. I tried to renew the ip, but when I do I get a "server unavailable" error. it used to be directly connected..but just one day..nothing.

    Uninstall the drivers
    Reboot the PC
    Install the Drivers
Also get the latest drivers for that NIC

    update the MODEM firmware; reboot

if you have a router, do likewise.

Win/98 does not respond well to release/renew -- just perform the /release
    and reboot

Meaning there's a switch or additional equipment between your computer and the router? Or is the network cable plugged in directly to the router?

If Windows tells you the server is unavailable - it is often telling the truth - check your cables and make sure your router is working properly.

You may have a damaged Winsock, which this utility can repair for you: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

And yes, I know it says XP but it should work. If you find you can't use it, try http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm
