XP 2 doesn't boot when CD-RW added?

My new Lenovo Windows XP SP 2 machine has DVD/CD-ROM ... and an open slot. I took a CD-RW from my old machine and installed in the open slot, connecting the bus and power. What could go wrong? Windows doesn't boot. I disconnect the power, and all is well as this post demonstrates.

What do I need to do to add the CD-RW to my machine?
