Any help appreciated im running XP Home on a 2ghz P4, machine will not boot coming up with the error 'missing or corrupt file - ntfs.sys' cannot boot into safe mode same error comes up, have tried hanging hdd on another machine and replacing the file, also virus checked the drive while it was connected to other machine. Also tried using an XP disc to get to repair but it doesn't get that far, instead comes up with an error 7 during set up.

You could try putting it back into the other machine and running scandisk on it, put a tick in "repair all errors", that may do it.

still no joy

Already tried scandisk since i posted also tried reloading from an XP disk i borrowed, fault seems to of developed further to now not booting from hdd at all. Coming to the conclusion that the hdd has had it. thanks anyway for your help.

Does the computer hang as it tries to boot or does it re-boot? Have you been able to boot into DOS using a boot disk? How old is the drive and what are its specs?
