Xp Explorer Folder Size

This may seem a simple query but why does xp explorer not should the size of a folder in the view details the same way it shows the size of an individual file. I know if you place the courser over the folder it will indicate the size but it would be much more convenient to be able to see it immediately on opening. is it possible to set it to do this?

This would make browsing files very slow because Windows would have to scan all the subfolders to tell you the folder size.

You can try it yourself. Open the C:\ drive and hover the mouse over Program Files. It will take several seconds before Windows tells you what size the folder is. Now imagine that delay for every single folder under C:\ or wherever. You could be waiting up to 30 seconds when browsing C:\ if Windows had to calculate the folder sizes in realtime.
