Just recently I've seen complete freezes in XP (ie will not Ctr-Alt Dlt - has to be reset. No error messages), during which fan speed seems to increase. Hard drive inactive. Could this be processor overheating? PC 4 years old - hardrives renewed 18 mths ago.

Wait for the next freeze and as soon as it does, touch your finger to your CPU heatsink and see how hot it is. If you can't keep your finger on it, it's to hot! If it practically burns you, then there is the problem.

If it's not hot and you can keep your finger on it, it could be another problem, such as messed up software drivers, or bad RAM or hard drive.
Also touch the other heatsinks, such as the northbridge, and graphic card's heatsink. Just to be sure.
