xp hangs

hi i have win xp pro and an athlon xp 2000+ with 512 megs or pc133 ram and all was fine then one day went to shut down after a file download and it hangs on saving settings.
i've tried all sorts but it does it every time i try to shut down can anyone help its driving me nuts

Try setting up another master user account see if it works from that if it does remove yours then create a new one for yourself.
