XP Repair Hangs

I am assisting a friend with his XP SP2 computer. We have tried to repair his installation with the XP distribution disk (with the Repair selection under the Install XP menu selection rather than the repair console).

On a restart of the reinstallation, the process goes fine until it gets to the point that I would expect it to ask for the motherboard disk for the drivers for the chipset. At this point, instead of asking for the disk it returns a Javascript error ("Invalid command line").

Obviously, the installation process stores the installation progress on the hd somewhere that allows it to restart somewhere near where it stopped on an earlier failed try. I would like to get rid of that data so I can try to reinstall in place from scratch.

I am trying to avoid a clean install so as to avoid reinstalling users and applications.

Cheers,
Art

If it has more than 1 stick of RAM, pull out the Extra sticks before installing - I don't know why, but this often helps.
