As expected, Google has officially announced YouTube for Kids, its standalone YouTube app with curated videos that are appropriate for young viewers. The app will be free and funded by a limited number of family-friendly pre-roll video ads, which will exclude any click-throughs to websites.

Although rumors pointed to an Android-only release, YouTube for Kids is available on iOS as well, and will be coming soon to kid-centric tablets like the Kurio and Nabi. That said, you’ll only find it in U.S. app stores for now.

As for the content itself, YouTube promises videos from DreamWorks TV, Jim Henson TV, Mother Goose Club, Talking Tom and Friends, National Geographic Kids, Reading Rainbow, Thomas the Tank Engine and more.

Kids will be able to browse channels and playlists in four categories: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. There’s also voice search so little ones can still find videos of things they’re curious about. Meanwhile, parents have some built in options to control the experience for kids, including a timer to limit kids’ screen time, the ability to limit or turn off videos’ background music and sound effects (thank you!), and deactivating search altogether to limit kids to the highlighted videos on the home screen and each category.

YouTube plans to keep on adding features or tweaking the experience, which is why they’ve also included an option for parents to share their feedback.
