YouTube to stop placing ads on videos from channels with fewer than 10K views

YouTube has announced it is adding a new restriction on which creators can make money from the platform. From now on, the company will no longer serve ads on videos produced by channels that have accrued fewer than 10,000 lifetime views.

The video hosting site launched its YouTube Partner Program back in 2007 and opened it up to everyone five years ago. But the system is often abused - some users re-upload original content to their own channels in an attempt to make money from it.

The change has also been brought about by the recent controversy that saw some companies pull their ads from YouTube after they were found to be running alongside videos promoting terrorism.

In the coming weeks, YouTube will introduce a review process for anyone applying to enter its Partner Program. “After a creator hits 10k lifetime views on their channel, we’ll review their activity against our policies,” wrote Ariel Bardin, YouTube’s VP of product management.

YouTube said the 10,000 total views threshold should allow it to determine if a channel is legit. “This new threshold gives us enough information to determine the validity of a channel. It also allows us to confirm if a channel is following our community guidelines and advertiser policies.”

"If everything looks good, we’ll bring this channel into YPP and begin serving ads against their content. Together these new thresholds will help ensure revenue only flows to creators who are playing by the rules," added Bardin.

Any current members of the YouTube Partner Program that have channels with under 10,000 total views won’t see their revenue affected by the change. But it does mean that creators starting a new channel will have to wait a while before they see any ad revenue.

Google has it all wrong. Terrorist videos should be accompanied by ad's for arm and ammunition, bomb making parts and assembly instructions etc. They can still do a roaring trade from those videos which have fewer than the allotted required views. ;) Advertising is Google's biggest money spinner and they should be past masters at it.

So basically YouTube has no algorithms in place to identify reposted content? I guess that makes sense - otherwise all the various shows and movies people have posted over the years would have to go. I wonder how much YouTube has made off those? In any case I'm glad to hear their discouraging contributions from new content creators - YouTube's competition will be more than happy to take them in.

Hmm… it seems to me that this will encourage new channels to post click bait to reach the threshold quickly. Does one need to watch a video through to conclusion for it to count as a view?

10k views is a reasonable amount of time for them to investigate reports. It at least massively lowers the amount of rubbish they need to manually check.

YouTube is over.

yeah no. As much Youtube could be whole lot better, its rather large to kill. Its like saying Facebook will die soon. Just like people said that Linux will over take Windows as the main platform for consumer desktop usage and we will have flying cars by 2015.

Point being, Youtube is far from over.

It's not even remotely like saying Facebook is over. People go where the money is and YouTube is beginning to police who is allowed to monetize. That opens up the door for competitors to swoop in and offer more.

They're going to be replaced in 10 year's time. Probably by Vid.me or someone similar, and the reason it will sink is the same reason the Titanic sunk: the people running it think it's too big to fail.

10k views sounds reasonable... unless you want to produce content in a local language or create a niche channel (and especially a niche channel in a local language).
