Zyxel C1100Z is a router. If you are connecting by ethernet directly to printer using the jetdirect server, then you may need to specify a static IP for the printer - see manuals for router and printer. http://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/setup-additional.html

how can I assign an IP address if the printer does not show up in the device table of the modem software?
thank you for your previous suggestions

Modem software? What modem software?

Modem part is connected to ISP and is on the WAN side. WAN is for the wild west 'outsiders'. LAN is hidden from WAN by the router using NAT. It is only LAN ports on router which are connected to the equipment which you want to communicate and share between (PCs, printers, etc). This router has an IP address and a password which gets you into the router where you can set up the router and provide for the LAN connections using an IP address range and submask of your LAN - you will want this in order to set up IP for the printer - typically at the upper end of the range if you configure a static IP.

Once you have this information you can then configure jetdirect server:

Some folks use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ) where the router defines IP as it discovers the printer, but most folks prefer static IP which survives restarts - your choice. If printer was configured for another IP range, it may not be visible to a router which is only looking at its predefined range of addresses..

I have a modem/router I meant the set up program for the router. I set the static IP address through the control panel of the hp printer. It all works fine now! Thank you!
