Europe very likely to bring in biometric passports

By Derek Sooman on October 28, 2004, 5:54 PM
The EU decided on Tuesday to adopt biometric passports within the next 18 months. Initially, records will be kept of facial characteristics, but technologies released over the following several years will expand that functionality to include a fingerprint of the bearer. Although this decision is still far from final, it does not look like there will be any objections. The call for biometric passports has been heavily influenced by the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
