Skype brings mainstream Internet telephony closer

"Siemens is delivering a giant step forward for Internet telephony for the residential market." - Niklas Zennstrom, Skype's chief executive.

Skype, the "free Internet telephony that just works" is to be loaded onto cordless phones by Siemens, allowing a phone to make calls using the Internet as well as using the regular phone network. It’s just a beginning, but look forward to a future where a greater and greater amount of telephony will be handled by the Internet. And about time too - those traditional telephone networks are out of date and badly underused. But how close is Internet telephony to being the norm?
