PeopleSoft founder and CEO David Duffield has resigned as chief executive of the company. Duffield, who returned to lead PeopleSoft in the face of its takeover battle with rival Oracle, offered no motives for the move.

The hostile takeover bid by Oracle for PeopleSoft was marked by mudslinging and accusations between the two business software makers. The events included a threat by Duffield to sue Oracle CEO Larry Ellison for defamation over information released by Oracle about Duffield's stock sales.

Both PeopleSoft and Oracle have declined to comment on the resignation, which was effective from December 21st.
