Sony has unveiled plans to digitize about 500 films which the company will make available to its customers as a video-on-demand service via Movielink. It is hoped that the service will be available next year. New digital download services for films will allow movies to be put onto flash memory for mobiles. Could Sony be trying to position itself as the iTunes of movie downloads?

This kind of idea comes at a time when the entertainment industry is up in arms about the huge amount of illegal downloading of movies that goes on all over the internet. Sony's new service will have to be very cheap in order to be attractive to users who might already be downloading movies from other sources, no matter how dubious those sources might be.
