Internet porn sites to get .xxx address suffixes

Soon, sites devoted to pornography (is that about three quarters of the internet?) will be able to have a web address that ends in .xxx, enabling customers to find the sites more easily, and also enabling internet users who want to steer clear to better block such sites.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers agreed on Wednesday to allow addresses ending in .xxx instead of the more common .com or .net suffixes.

The world's estimated one million pornographic site operators will not be required to use the new .xxx suffix when a private company designated by the internet regulator begins accepting registrations later this year.

Obtaining .xxx addresses from British-based ICM Registry will cost $60 US a year, about 10 times higher than the current price to register a .com address.

Additionally, other address suffixes were approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers recently. These included .jobs and .travel.
