John Carmack to Support XBox 360

With three new consoles set to hit the stage this year, game developers are going to have some tough choices to make. Not all games can be easily moved from one system to another and developing for two or more simultaneously can be very expensive. John Carmack, the mind behind the ever popular DOOM and QUAKE series, announced at QuakeCon 2005 that his company would be focusing on the XBox 360 for their console game development. This is unexpected, as Carmack has long lauded OpenGL as a useful and powerful way to present his titles.

It doesn't phase me either way, as I have always liked his titles regardless of the technologies used. Whether you hated or loved any of the Doom or Quake series, Carmack has been behind impressive gaming for a long time now, and decisive action usually brings about good results.

  1. Carmack is an icon in the gaming industry. He has always known where the future of gaming is heading. Now that consoles can do what he wants them to do, this is no surprise. Consoles also mean big money for ID, et al--Carmack can have his cake and eat it (so can we).
