Sony and Toshiba Give Up Uniformity

After many years of debates and lawsuits, press releases and R&D, then finally a potential for working together, rivals Sony and Toshiba have finally called it quits on working together to create a uniform standard for next-gen high-density optical discs. There was a lot of potential there, with benefits from both companies in a single product possible, but now it looks as though HD DVD and Blu-ray are set to go head to head. This doesn't bother me now... but it will bother me, and many others, if we end up with optical drives that support one but not the other. Time will tell!
