Datafast, an Australian company, in partnership with a local energy provider and Mitsubishi Electric, has rolled out the the first large-scale broadband over powerline (BPL)network. The new technology, which has received attention lately for its ability to use existing networks and reach virtually everywhere power is available, can offer speeds that may surpass the fastest available DSL lines. The partnership formed by the previously mentioned three companies, known as TasTel, will be offering 256kbps, 1Mbps and 4Mbps speeds(as well as a 1Mbp/s up/down offering for home hosters). It's initially being offered to only a small area, but eventually may be offered to all 250,000 customers on that particular power grid. This may eventually let anyone in the world (provided they have electricity and a computer) be able to have high-speed Internet at affordable rates.
