New rules for Chinese news websites

By Derek Sooman on
That great champion of human freedom the Chinese Government has decreed that there are to be new rules on Internet news sites, as the nation tries to further regulate such sites. According to the Xinhua news agency, the new rules are to be imposed immediately, and state that Internet news sites and content must provide information that is beneficial to the public and state. Sites are forbidden from spreading news that goes against China's security and public interest. Sites that violate this will be censored or even shut down. Quite what constitutes "information that is beneficial to the public and state" is not entirely clear to me, but I think it probably relates to agreeing with the policies of the Chinese government and not opposing them. What a lovely world we live in.
