AMD is making advances in the market, for sure. Earlier in the year AMD boasted large increases in market share for servers with their Opteron, and now it is being reported that AMD is holding 20.4% of the desktop market, and 17.8% of the world CPU market. Transmeta and Via also factor into that, but Intel is still top dog overall. A lot of the success by AMD can be attributed to the good introduction of the Athlon64 and it's rapid adoption. This isn't the first time AMD has hit 20%, but they slid back before, giving them all the more incentive to continue innovating. Intel has a lot of promising things on the horizon for the next few years so it will be very interesting to see how AMD plans to keep up.
