As the next generation DVD format wars rage on, MGM has announced that it is to support Sony's Blu-ray disc format. Currently, the format is gaining greater support over HD DVD, the rival format from Toshiba.

"Adopting this new Blu-ray technology, with its expanded storage capacity and increased interactive capabilities, allows us to continue to provide our customers with the best movie viewing experience available," said Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO of MGM Studios.
MGM claims to be working to begin releasing film and television titles from its catalogue of over 4,000 films, just as soon as Blu-ray hardware becomes available next year. Sony Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer claimed that this was "a tremendous win for movie lovers everywhere."
