AMD announces "Live" technology to oppose Viiv

Intel's been getting attention recently with the partnership with ATI and the announcement of Viiv. AMD is set to now challenge Intel in the same field, digital entertainment, with the release of “Live” technology. Based around the X2, “Live” will be a combination of technologies oriented towards use in multimedia environments such as media centers. At the Consumer Electronics Show, AMD announced the technology along with several other companies that will assist in the development and promotion of “Live”.

”AMD did so at this week's Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, touting its "Live" offering, which already has the support of STMicroelectronics and other technology partners, including Alienware, ATI, Broadcom, Motorola, Nvidia and VIA.”
AMD definitely has a long road ahead with Intel ready to do this completely the Intel way, but of course they have been at each others throats for a long time, and it's brought many good things towards us. Let's hope that continues!

  1. Again, competition is a nice thing to have. It would be interesting to see how Live compares to Viiv. I think it is kind of funny how AMD is trying to grab partnerships away from Intel. That or the fact ATI is assisting both Intel and AMD... But AMD definitely does have some big names like Motorola and NVIDIA backing itself up.
  2. AMD seems to be doing a lot better and I'm more than glad that they're staying competitive against Intel. I'm expecting AMD to pull this one ahead of Intel or maybe I'm just cheering for the underdog.
  3. Well, with alot of competition, it pushes both companies to make quality products. This is a plus for consumers. Intel and AMD are fierce competitors, and both companies are always pushing each other to their limits. No one knows for sure how live and Viiv will compare yet, but I'm sure both products will be great for consumers.
  4. This is an important great step for AMD. Way to go AMD!!!
  5. This comes as no surprise seeing how the rivalry of these two giants has been around for quite some time. I'm sure AMD will top Intel again.
  6. Competition is definitely a good thing, but I wish the competition would diversify just a tad. One compeditor comes out with a feature set, and the other needs to mimic its function, slap a new name on it and throw it up as competition.AMD already surprised us all by creating a great processor that is very much different from Intels offering, I hope this will also difersify from Intels offering instead of being roughly the same thing with a different name and a different means of execution.

Too much demand for it, it's a catch-22. I find it quite unlikely that there would be something completely new. Even Apple is abandoning PPC architecture and going x86.
  8. Yeah, I was reffering more to the way AMD had taken a different approach in terms of lower mhz but stronger in other features to result in an equally attractive processor.I can see how I phrased my above post would cause confusion. I hope AMDs implementation of this feature will vary from Intels to not only provide competition but a relatively diverse solution.
  9. This sounds like an hasty attempt by AMD only to steal the spotlight from Viiv. They only told us vague details, and a product based on X2 processor will be priced at a premium. As for the backing, they will happily back anyone who buy their products. My bet is we won't be seeing the new product for a while.
  10. AMD is a Johnny-come-lately company."Live" rhymes with "Viiv".Isn't that surprising and coincidental that it happens to rhyme? Oh but AMD is reviving an old name!! Yeah right.I wonder when AMD will become innovative.
  11. AMD has some good names like Alienware backing it. Still, Intel has got the advantage timewise. Still, thats what we said about the xbox360...
  12. Intel is trying to find more inroads to untaped markets, this is just one.
