DDR2 prices are rising for 2006

By Justin Mann

Usually, increases in adoption brings about lower prices all around for newer technologies. Sadly, that isn't holding true for DDR2 at the moment. Samsung, one of the largest DDR2 manufacturers in the world, is having supply issues, or at least aren't supplying with the market with enough, resulting in a price increase across the board. Samsung's intense focus on other technologies, especially NAND, may be part of the reason. As the year moves on, we'll start seeing more and more devices utilizing DDR2, and Samsung will definitely follow with market trends. Within the year we'll see Samsung and others start showing off 90nm parts, and perhaps the availability of DDR2 on AMD-based motherboards after M2 makes its debut.

  1. Wow, Samsung is getting their fingers in every pie these days. Not only do they manufacture DDR2 ram, which is about to enter its period in the spotlight. But they manufacture GDDR3 for most major video card providers, and thats only their RAM division! Their LCD monitors are also top notch.I remember a day when I would avoid samsung products with an almost religious furvor. Then I got my X800 GTO2 and took the Samsung 1.6ns GDDR3 to 120Mhz over stock, and ran it from there ever since. Those days are definately behind me now. That said, I'm glad I'm not planning on going to DDR2 anytime soon, doesn't sound like its going to be cheap.
  2. it's interesting to see the news as I think Samsung should expect the need for DDR2. Let's hope that the supply can keep up with the demand once the M2 hits the market.
  3. Ouch, I'll have to order my DDR2 soon then for my future upgrade endeavor.
  4. I wonder if better DDD2 memory speed at lower cost will be availible when the new amd M2 arrives in 2nd quarter. So far the experts are saying the new M2 platform will NOT have a big speed boost. Will better quality DD2 we can maybe squeeze more out of it.
  5. This is very unfortunate. The price for DDR2 should be lower, because as of now, its pretty much considered as old technology. I'm sure eventually we will see a price reduction, but for now, I guess we'll just have to wait for that to happen.
  6. Definately a short term movement in price. Supplies should react driving price down again. I would not worry. Still strange on Samsung's part.
  7. Not really strange there just upping the price to try and lower demand so they can catch back up with it. Demand goes up, supplys go down, price goes up, demand goes down, supply goes up, price goes down excetera excetera. The price will level out eventually.
  8. Anyone who can point to links on where I could read how much of a performance gain one can expect?Seems to me that the performance increase doesn't justify the change of CPU, motherboard and of course the RAM.
  9. I hope Samsung isn't pulling a Xbox 360 with supply "issues." With the advent of Socket 940, DDR2 will definitely be the main attraction in the RAM department. Rather than restricting supplies or diverting attention to other products, whatever the reason, it would be a wiser move to ramp up DDR2 production in terms of economics. Especially with DDR about to be phased out (it's just a matter of time now), DDR2 will be weighed so much heavier than before. I can't picture an easier revenue for Samsung.
  10. Great(yea right)... I just built a new computer and it supports DDR2.
  11. Well that bites, not that i'm going to be using DD2 anytime soon, but i want corsair to go down price...
  12. This is weird, where I live, DDR2 price is lower than DDR. And with the popularity of Athlon 64 and socket 939 for this last few years, DDR PC3200 sale will keep going strong at least for a year or two.

  14. doesn't GDDR3 out perform DDR2? memory isn't that expensive right no anyway.
  15. GDRR3 is for graphiccards thus the extra G infront. Yes, it outperforms DDR2, but it's common to have over 512MB system memory, but not over 256MB on graphiccards. The extra performance does cost.

But anyway, this is a bit annoying but will quickly fix itself by the second quater.
