AMD to put chip prices up

AMD is set to put some chip prices up. Sources claim that the processor giant is to raise prices on some of its Opteron S939 CPUs. This is apparently going to happen on the 23rd of this month. However, the company is also seemingly set to lower the price of the top Opteron models at the same time.

AMD will also make changes on several Athlon 64 X2 desktop processors on that date, but the direction of those prices is downwards, with the recent introduction of the Athlon 64 FX 60.

The Opteron 165 939 will rise from $295 to $325, the 170 from $384 to $394, the 175 from $490 to $504. But the Opteron 180 939 pin CPU will drop by a fairly large percentage - from $811 to $693.

  1. Ok, fine, just leave the Althons alone ? Ouch! Well, that really is not a bad increase...not fun to deal with, but it really is not too bad, and as long as they keep selling, the prices should go down soon enough.
  2. If that's the case, I might go back to intel...OH NO!! I CAN'T!! MY MOBO IS AMD!! NOOOOOO!!!Well, I've found that AMD processors are extremely fast and affordable. Their current RRP's are bargains compared with Intels. However, as you pointed out nathanskywalker, the price increase isn't by much. I'm still willing to pay the extra dough for an AMD processor.
  3. Well this isn't going to stop me in my quest to make my system a speed monster. AMD is number one, and by the quality of their product, I'd say the prices are reasonable. It certainly won't hurt AMD's sales, but it makes the consumers a little disappointed at the higher prices. I still love ya AMD!!!!!! and keep producing quality products!!!!!!!
  4. Seriously, leave the Athlons alone (unless the price goes down) But really $20 to $30 more for a CPU isn't much at all. Exspecialy when you are in the $300+ range.
  5. Well as long as AMD makes quality chips I think that they have the right to raise prices a dash. As long as they make decent budget chips at a reasonable budget price.
  6. The main goal is to raise the Opteron prices (in general), I believe. Like I've said before, AMD is aware of overclockers buying a $200 Opteron and overclocking it to the speed of a about-to-be $811 FX-57 and beyond. This is overall a good move. Dual core is the technology of the future, so dropping prices in the AMD X2 series will produce more sales and better "bang for the buck" for consumers. If AMD really wants to detract consumers (non-server/workstation) from buying Opterons, AMD wouldn't put them in socket 939 in the first place . The hardcore overclockers will continue to purchase the Opterons despite the increase in price tag due to better stability and overclocking capability. Either way, AMD gets more money and still wins.

Like someine has already pointed out, $20 is not that big a diff.....of course that is, if you have money...
  8. Blame this price increase on Intel, if they have better products at lower prices, I'm sure AMD wouldn't even consider of raising it's prices. Competition is always good at bringing prices down, and I think the competition between AMD and Intel is somewhat unbalanced right now, in the favor of AMD.Go Intel, we all depend on u to bring down AMD's prices.
  9. Lol this is why its important to buy the Opty's early. I was watching (in horror I might add) as the CABNE's went from novel to well-known over the course of maybe 36-72 hours. And well-known translates to sold-out Opterons all over the web.I eventually plucked one from an independent retailer, but it ain't a CABNE. I'm hoping to pair it up with a juicy 7800GT for the ultimate combo, =D.
  10. it's still speculation, according to the report. it will raise some of the high end opteron but lower some of teh amd64 lines.
  11. With these high prices, why do they wonder why pc games declining in profits? after paying by blood for a processor, there is little else left over to buy games.
  12. Its going to happen. AMD has a history of low price points not because they want it, or like it that way. Its not because they care oh-so-much about joe consumer. Its because they need exposure and a stronger foothold in the market. As they are gaining in popularity their prices will reflect that. Why? Because at that point they can!Moral of the story: Being a fanboy helps nothing but your ego. Praise good products for what they are, when they are, and realize that idolizing a company who produces a product upon which to acquire profit is nonsense.
  13. I bet this won't be the last price adjustment we see in this quarter either.. Here's to hoping that when the new AM2 platform comes out that the dual core S939 CPUs drop even further...I would pick up an FX-60 today if it were under $1000, as it represents the pinnacle of S939 performance. So much nice hardware to buy, only so many hours a day to work...
  14. I think its because it did so welll, that AMD want to get some of that profit you know. Who wouldn't?
  15. The prices already got up of $4 since December for the X2 3800+ in my case. At least, since my computer was ordered in December, I keep the lowest price!
  16. Hrm... AMD raising prices? Since the amounts are so low I'm guessing they have good reasons for it (gas prices affecting shipping perhaps, manufacturing costs going up?), and the drop in the higher end is actually a decent amount. This does not affect me much. As much as I'd love a top of the line machine I can never afford it (I'm married... enough said lol). I generally analyze the price to performance ratio and that usually shows the 4th or 5th chip in line as being the top.
  17. Tell me, if the speeds and quality are as before, then truly I shall stand by AMD.And I do hope to upgrade my entire system once I have the time (and money )
  18. Prices have been strangely low, undercutting Athlons. I think AMD knew what is wat up to. Enthusiasts bought mass loads and they credit it to the server market. Just fake numbers for the stock holders. At leats the X2 prices are going down.
  19. I'll never get an Intel processor (too expensive and they run hot @100*c) and as long as the increases stay low, people shouldn't worry. People who buy systems as a package shouldn't see any increases.Has anyone noticed that graphics cards prices are coming down in price while the opposite is happening here with CPU's?
  20. They are lowering X2 3800+ prices and raising 165 prices...I saw this coming a long long time ago. As it stands now, theres no reason not to get the 165 over the X2.
  21. I prefer AMD cpu's. I'm glad to hear that they're lowering some of the X2 processors as I may be in the market for one of those eventually!
