Official release of Opera Mini

By Justin Mann

Be the first on your block to use Opera Mini browser! The 1.0 version of Opera's mini version has been officially released as of today. It's been available as beta for a while now, so many have had the chance to tinker with it already. As with Opera's desktop browser, it is free. The browser is designed to use Java, so your phone will need to support that (most newer models do), and lets a regular cell phone be able to parse and view web pages. The program is available at Opera's site along with instructions for use.

  1. Awesome! I haven't used opera much, but i think it would almost be comparable with firefox, and it is supposedly very secure(meaning hackers haven't had a chance to tear it apart yet ), and that would be great to have on a cell phone. Especially the tabbed browsing feature, thought i don't really know how a browser works in a cell phone...
  2. i think this is just wicked sick!!!! (I just had to make an unreal tournament quote here). But seriously, this stable browser will work so well on a mobile platform.I still advocate for manditory inclusion of styluses (is that right?)on cellphones. It will make life easier, trust me.
  3. I use Opera as well as Mozilla Firefox concurrently (don't ask me why). Opera was always a turn-off for many people because it used to cost money to buy licenses for Opera's desktop browser. On Opera's 10th anniversary, they gave out free product keys and a few weeks later promptly made the browser entirely free for the public. I took the liberty and tried it, and it is on par if not better than Firefox. Opera Mini seems to be fairly good, with the only downside being Java-required so older cell phones are out of luck. But other than that, it looks to be another great product by Opera.
  4. mmh, I wonder how come it only support mobile phone. I wish other people will also make web-browser for the pda.
  5. Whick PDA? Opera supports many of those too..I installed Opera Mini on two phones yesterday and it works great. Now I have the whole web in my pocket, instead of the silly WAP pages my provider offers, and I didn't even have to pay an arm and a leg for a smartphone. The biggest fuss was with the WAP settings. I swear the people who design cell phone menus are from a twisted alternate universe where "logic" is something you do after drinking a bottle of vodka with mushrooms.
  6. I knew it, I just knew that Opera was going to release a new version of their browser somehow or another. Opera has a great browser with many great features, and a mini browser would alow you to work outside of their browser, without the confliction with opening applications. Great job Opera!!!!! love your browser!!!!!!!!
  7. this is probably in response to firefox 2.0 coming out soon. i'll guess we'll see...
  8. Looks like most people fail to grasp that Opera Mini is a cell phone app and it has nothing to do with PCs or Firefox..

I have a nokia 6310i that will run Java, but isn't on Opera's list. I have the feeling the phone needs to have a color screen, which the 6310i doesn't.I have been using primarily Opera for 10 years, through lots of different hardware and software versions. I think it is far and away better than IE, Mozilla or Firefox. In my experience, they all crash too often, but Opera's feature set is much more mature than Firefox's, and it doesn't have IE's bloated, integrated-into-everything code. The download used to be 1.5Mb, I think, now its just under 4Mb. And Opera keeps adding useful features, despite their small size. rb [Edited by ratba_tardly on 2006-01-26 04:22:46]
