Apple launches "iTunes U" in the US

By Derek Sooman

iTunes is being expanded in the US to include iTunes U, a free, hosted service for colleges and universities. It will provide easy access to educational content, including lectures and interviews 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Through iTunes U, users can download content to their Macs or PCs regardless of their location in the US. They can then listen to and view content on their Mac or PC or transfer that content to iPod for listening or viewing on the go.
It is possible that a similar service may be launched in the UK in the future.

 2. Hmmm..i've never used itunes...not really anyway. Personally Appel is just to non-verstatile, maybe this is a step in the right direction.
 3. This actually seems like a really good idea, the ease of getting podcasts from iTunes regular is great. My last year of grad school the university was using Blackboard for putting up homework and video recorded lectures and I hated it, and so did most of the professors. Most just put up password protected content on the course's website. If iTunesU will allow you to get pdf files as well (the article didn't say) it could almost completely eliminate the 'need' for Blackboard. Blackboard only has some realtime chalkboard (worthless) and student file hosting above iTunesU. E-Mailing the files to my group was easier than putting the thing up on Blackboard anyway.
 4. I'm in university now and it would be amazing if professors would use this to provide their lectures. It's so easy to miss a class or simply miss something that they say. I'll often look at my notes and wonder what I was trying to note with my horrible writing. My university does provide teachers a lot of options to post their notes or anything they want online and some still don't use it. A lot of them are stuck in the old blackboard teaching and it's a lot less effective. Some of them feel that if they post their notes, no one will come to class. So just because a good method to get their lectures out there is available, some will chose not to use it. That being said, if this was used, it would save the students a lot of time, paper, and hassle.
 5. Originally posted by sjps220:
It's so easy to miss a class
I wish it is as easy for me to . Apple's expansion of iPod is simply amazing. Many things can be said of Apple, both good and bad. But really, Apple's integration of iPod into society's daily life genuinely surprises me. Who would think a MP3 player would have so many effects and tools outside the field of listening music? It seems like these days Apple can't do anything wrong as long as whatever they implement is related to iPod.
 6. To clear up any confusion about what I meant by Blackboard (since sjps220 spoke of traditional blackboard). I meant the online blackboard, as seen here: www.blackboard.com
 7. haha oops! Well I do have teachers that teach to 100+ with an old fashioned blackboard and put nothing online! We have something similar to blackboard.com but it's called Web CT. And I agree with exscind about the ipod. I'm still undecided on what I think of apple's computers, but they have really done a number on mp3 players with the ipod. A lot of people call all mp3 players ipods.

 9. Apple is trying to expand the usage of ipod to more than just music player. It's nice but on the other hand, I don't like Apple's way of limiting usage.
 10. It will be interesting to see how many universities will pick this up. My went to IU a few years ago and they did not record very many classess. Perhaps that will change. One feature IU did use was to have password protected forums and class discussion (which almost no did) webpage.
 11. I just wonder if people is going to start to cheat with iPods in exams...Don't you think that the iTunes name is a bit unrelated to educational content? It's not music!
 12. I agree with the cheating comment above, I believe we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere.

Just took a while to type in, but once it was there you coudl transfer it to all your buddies, or get it from one of them.
 14. iTunes is amazing! For anyone out there that doesn't have it, I suggest you jump on the COOLEST bandwagon out there! This sounds like an excellent idea. Hopefully they expand this idea to the UK and Canada ASAP!
 15. I like iTunes for music but i still prefer WMP when it comes to videos. Howver, that may change at this rate...
