NTT DoCoMo to develop 3G platform

By Derek Sooman

Together with several major Japanese cellphone and chip makers, NTT DoCoMo is working to develop a single-chip system that takes care of core mobile phone features such as operating system, middleware and drivers.

As a result prospective handset makers will be able to take the platform and build various bells-and-whistles features such as a camera or music player on top of it and be spared the worry of developing the core of the phone.
The company’s efforts, which have the aim of accelerating the global adoption of WCDMA services, are expected to be complete sometime between July and September 2007.
