PS3 price rumour says $399

Rumours are flying around about the final price of the PS3. The real price will not be made public until the 8th of May, but according to an article at Theinquirer.net, the retail price will be $399 for the console containing a 60 gigabyte hard drive. This might strike some as a little on the expensive side, but its certainly a better price than the 499 euros suggested by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe George Fornay only just recently.

The PlayStation 3 is the successor to the PlayStation 2 and will mainly compete against the Nintendo Revolution and Xbox 360. It will be backwards compatible with earlier PS1 and PS2 games.

  1. it's still quite a lot. but yes, better than 499
  2. I don't think that $399 is expensive considering the power of the machine. And I don't know if you remember, but xbox was $500.
  3. I think 399 is a good rollout price. Especially compared to the rollout price that MS asked for the 360. Of course they had the edge on the nextgen consoles since PS3 and Revolution were still in "development". I love my PS2 and held out on the 360 for the PS3. Now if we could only get them to box it with two wireless controlers and Hi-Def cables. ;-)
  4. If the $399 price-point is true, then it's going to kill XBox360 sales dead in their tracks. For $299 you can have a non-HD ready 18 month old DVD based Xbox360.For $100 more, you can have a brand new, cuting edge PS3, with Blu-Ray, HDD, HDMI ports, fully HD Ready, and PS2 catalog. If these rumours turn out to be true, PS3 represents a awersome amount of technology for the price, and a very cheap way to get a HD Ready player.
