TDK's 200GB Blu-Ray disc more than a rumor

By Justin Mann

Could we see a 200GB optical disc? TDK is working on such a project, and recently has made progress that allows them to squeeze an incredible 200GB of data onto a single disc. Originally just a rumor from them, then later a product with “eventual” release, it may arrived much sooner than exepcted. Utilizing 6 layers for data (50GB Blu-Ray discs use 2 layers), TDK has found a way to get a large amount more of data onto a single layer than before, also bringing in the potential for cheaper discs that are above 50GB but below 200GB in size. Then again, current gen drives may not even be able to take advantage of such a disc. But who would be surprised by that?

 1. Big discs! Mmmm. These are gonna be available in Rewritable, not like Holographic...
current gen drives
That's only in Japan that there are some I think.
 2. When the next standard in dvd-media gets confirmed, could it be possible to change that to "ReBurnable"?
 3. I think that they already announced 6 different BluRay formats...

Their technology is already being used in industrial applications. They were hoping to have end user products available by years end.http://www.inphase-technologies.com/products/profes

 5. I think it's 1.6TBs WORM..Something that may warp your guys noodle is the new HDDs from Seagate...I know it has nothing to do with this tpoic, but it's a good read.Seagate came up with Heat Assisted Magentic Recording (HAMR) drive that is capable of 6.25TB (Terrabyte) per square inch, with maximum capabilitiesof up to 490TB (four hunder and ninty Terrabytes) with 4 - 5 platters. Since most of seagates drives are 2 platters, they will hold 200TBs. Due to be released around 2010, just enough time to play around with one before we all blow up in 2012 ..full story herehttp://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage/display/200403
