Wii tops console sales in North America

How goes the console wars? Right now, Nintendo is smiling gladly with their performance in the U.S. where the Wii is leading in sales. In January, the Wii managed to snag 485,000 sales in North America and 294,000 in the U.S. alone, putting it significantly above both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Sadly for Sony, the Xbox 360 also continues to outsell the PS3.

Is Sony still standing by their claim that the Wii is nothing more than an impulse buy? With worldwide sales of the Wii more than double that of the PS3, I somehow doubt it.

The thing with Sony is instead of having a long hard thought of what gamers would want to buy, they're 'telling' them what to buy, and the sales figures are really showing how that played out. It's no big suprise that the Wii is selling so much, I (along with quite a bunch of others, it seems) don't play a game just to oogle at the graphics, or fiddle with a bunch of gimmicks that don't add to the gameplay what'soever, I play for pure enjoyment. This is how it used to be, and this is how it will continue to be.Microsoft has a large base of gamers using XBox Live, and the games appeal to them. Nintendo is building a huge base of gamers by making games appeal to them using innovation and gameplay, and the ability of downloading original retro classics (like XBox Live Arcade, but on a bigger scale). So far all I'm seeing in the timeline for Sony is their loss of exclusives, forcing a format on people unnecessarily, and a childish attitude by the PR department which has just angered a bunch of gamers. The console has a LOT of potential, but it's Sony's decision if they want it to get anywhere in this "console war", or not.
