AMD claims Barcelona will be new performance king

By Justin Mann

On April 23, 2007, 3:14 PM

Could AMD's long delay on Barcelona be worth the wait? Recently, AMD has revised their performance estimates for their upcoming architecture, and are claiming that it will outperform Clovertown by around 40% at any given time. On top of that, they claim that in some areas it'll be as high as 50%. They even claim that on their next release, Intel's highest-performing Quad Core will lack by as much as 20%. Where are they drawing these figures from? They are not releasing specific clock speed figures for the new CPUs.

It's a bit late in the game for AMD to be trying to win on paper announcements, so hopefully they have more to run on than this later in the year.

 1.
“over the competition’s highest-performing quad-core processor at the same frequency.”
With Yorkfield running a 3.4-3.66GHz just months after 2.3GHz Barcelona's release this is more very sad news from AMD.
 2. Hopefully AMD will gain an edge even if its a small one.
 3. all their talks are really getting on my nerves. they need to shut up and make the deadlines. all the time they spent on talking could be used on getting this mythical product out in the market. i just read from another source that at least for the desktop sector of the K10 won't be widely available untill after christmas. they're releasing for the server market in late 3Q first. again, AMD it's time for you to show us something or keep that mouth shut. it's getting to a point that's extremely annoying to see another claims of yours.
 4. After Intel and Nvidia started sharing technology a few years back their processors have thrived. AMD/ATI will have a very hard time catching up with Intel. The best thing for them is to keep quiet and put out or get out. Beating their chests over something that probably won't be out until late Fall makes them look very desperate. I want to see AMD succeed and keep the race close because everyone benefits.
 5. Dudes AMD is just playing smart. If they didn't say anything to get you excited would you wait for AMD or just buy Intel? I for one intend to upgrade soon but after hearing this anouncement it gets me a little excited so I think I can wait and see because if this is true I don't want slow Intel being in my computer
