Just little over two years after eBay agreed to buy Skype in a hefty $2.6 billion deal, word has started circulating that Google may be in negotiations to buy the web telephony firm from eBay. As with all rumors, this info should be taken with a grain of salt, but the deal could actually make sense considering both companies' ambitions in the mobile market.

The original idea behind the Skype acquisition back in 2005 was to integrate the VoIP service into eBay, so that buyers could communicate easily with sellers. But it's no secret that the company is unhappy with the performance of Skype, having so far failed to produce the sort of revenues it had hoped for. We'll have to wait and see where this goes. In the meantime, you can read an interesting take on the rumor's consistency at Skype Journal.
