Seagate launches 250GB laptop drive

The trend towards high-capacity laptop disk drives continues, and Seagate is finally joining the ranks of Hitachi, Samsung, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu with a 250GB laptop drive. The new 2.5-inch drive, part of Seagate’s Momentus line, features two disc platters spinning at 5,400rpm, 8MB of cache, and the SATA 3 Gb/sec interface. The Momentus 5400.4 lineup also includes 120GB, 160GB and 200GB models.

Seagate currently holds the number one spot in the hard drive industry overall, but the company has hardly been a driving force in the capacity race on the notebook side. Rivals Toshiba, Western Digital and Fujitsu are already touting 320GB notebook drives, while both Hitachi and Samsung have recently promised to ship 500GB notebook drives in the near future.
