Apple to allow VoIP over Wi-Fi for iPhone

Whether the iPhone will eventually gain VoIP functionality is a question has been floating around ever since the launch of the device, but if Steve Jobs recent comments are to be taken plainly, it looks like a VoIP client for the iPhone could be just around the corner.

During last week’s launch of the much-anticipated SDK for the iPhone, Jobs said that Apple would not block third party developers from creating VoIP solutions for the iPhone as long as the application doesn’t use the mobile carrier’s network. That means that VoIP over Wi-Fi will be allowed on the iPhone provided that someone is willing to write an application to do it, and at least one company already seems to be rising to the challenge.
