eBay to build own affiliate network, abandons ValueClick
ValueClick is suffering more setbacks than legal penalties, it seems. Just one day after we learned that the ad company will be shelling out money to the Government to settle spam complaints, one of their biggest customers has announced that they are going to reduce their reliance on them.
eBay announced that they will be setting up their own affiliate network, helping to get more traffic to their sites, including eBay.com and Half.com, without needing third-party referrals. The news affected ValueClick's stock, and in the long term it'll probably affect their viability as a whole. With marks on their record for poor legal behavior and big-profile customers leaving, they must be hurting. eBay's move will take place soon, in less than two weeks. This impacts anyone downstream from them as well that worked through eBay and ValueClick, which encompasses thousands of businesses.
