Wii takes the lead in another huge month for videogames

The NPD Group has released its videogame industry sales report for the month of March. As usual, the DS and Wii took the lead on hardware sales – with 698,000 and 720,000 units sold respectively – but this time, Nintendo also finished with the top-selling title of March, Super Smash Bros Brawl. The recently released game topped the charts easily by moving 2.7 million copies, followed by Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 with 752,000 copies sold.

Microsoft, for its part, celebrated barely overtaking arch rival Sony in the console wars after two months of lagging sales, mainly due to a “supply issue”. Microsoft sold 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles, ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3 which found 257,000 customers – though the latter was happy to tout that sales of its PS3 have doubled over the past year, which, if you remember last March, is not quite the achievement.

Overall, March was yet another great month for the videogame industry with sales of consoles, games and accessories totaling a whopping $1.7 billion, a 51% increase from the same period in 2007. Check out the full lists of hardware and software sales here.

"which, if you remember last March, is not quite the achievement." - lol, classic.I'm amazed at how many Wii's sell, at this sale rate, I'd have thought everyone already had a Wii. =P

The PS3 and Xbox 360 are busy giving each other black eyes and losing teeth, ruining their appearance to the public. The Wii is sitting on the sideline, svelte and slim, attracting all the attention.
