Today is Firefox download day

Just a reminder to all Mozilla fans out there: today is the day that the latest iteration of the popular open source browser, Firefox 3, will be unleashed upon the world. As previously reported, Mozilla will mark the occasion with an event, dubbed “Download Day,” that aims to set a Guinness world record for the most software downloads in 24 hours.

There is no set number to beat with Firefox 3, as there isn’t actually a record for ‘most software downloads in one day’ yet, but Mozilla is aiming to break the 5 million barrier in the first 24 hours. It's worth pointing out that updates and failed attempts to download won't be counted, nor will be multiple downloads from the same computer.

Regardless of whether or not you care about the record – or even if you’re not a Firefox user – this would be a great occasion to try Firefox 3, which promises page loads up to seven times faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer and a number of new features. Download Day officially starts at 10 AM PDT (1:00 PM EDT) and you should be able to find Firefox 3 here.
